California Guitar Triowith Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo
With a whirlwind of instrumental styles fusing classical, rock, blues, jazz, world music, progressive, as well as the quintessential California musical genre surf music, the California Guitar Trio's stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them an enthusiastic following and wide notoriety, with significant crossover in the progressive, acoustic and classical music scenes. Notably, CGT music was featured on the television coverage of the 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 Olympics, and also on CBS, NBC, CNN, and ESPN TV programs. The CGT performed on the 2003 Grammy Awards nominated track Apollo on Tony Levin's CD Pieces of the Sun; and CGT music was sent into outer space as wake up music for the crew aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavor. Over the past 14 years of nearly incessant touring, the California Guitar Trio has shared the stage with superb musicians and performers such as: King Crimson, Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Tito Puente, Taj Mahal, Peter Rowan and Tony Rice, Dark Star Orchestra, Leftover Salmon, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Steve Lukather, Simon Phillips, David Sylvian, Adrian Legg, Kaki King, Monte Montgomery, Jake Shimabukuro and many more. "Combining the sounds of steel- and nylon-string acoustic guitars in a stew seasoned with multifinger attacks, percussive beats, and heavy Serbian and Greek influences, Kapsalis and Ivanovic have created one tasty experimental dish. From the opening ostinato of “Shadow Thief,” the record sounds huge. Throughout, Kapsalis’s two-handed steel-string parts frequently create the illusion of three guitars instead of two. It gets even better on “Vertigo,” where his dizzying eight-finger nubs do justice to the song’s title. Ivanovic is no slouch on the nylon, either, wringing out lithe melodic lines throughout." - Guitar Player Magazine

Eddy "The Chief" Clearwaterwith Lurrie Bell
During the 1950s, Chicago's West Side was a breeding ground for some of the world's greatest bluesmen. Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Freddie King and others ruled the clubs. With his fierce guitar playing, soulful and emotive vocals and wild stage shows, Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater easily belongs on this list. A Chicago legend, Clearwater is an intense, flamboyant blues-rocking showman. He's equally comfortable playing the deepest, most heartfelt blues or rocking, good-time party music. DownBeat said, "Left-hander Eddy Clearwater is a forceful six-stringer...He lays down some gritty West Side shuffles and belly-grinding slow blues that highlight his raw chops, soulful vocals, and earthy, humorous lyrics." Lurrie's 2007 critically acclaimed release "LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE" (2007) signaled Lurrie's triumphant return. Lurrie Bell has contributed to over 50 albums, including numerous solo efforts; duets with father Carey, and an extensive list of guest appearances. Gareth Asher & Andrew Hooverwith Sundomingo
Born in the small town Bowdon, GA, Gareth Asher was raised on a steady diet of old school funk, rock and soul. Asher attributes many of his musical sensibilities to monumental artists like Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, and groups like Chicago. As a writer, he respects the work of iconic performing songwriters like Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, and Don Henley and The Eagles. "I feel like my shell is finally cracking, and the best songs are starting to emerge on this new record. All my inner most thoughts and emotions are breaking through to the surface, and insisting on a ray of light to shine down", says Asher. Twenty-two-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist Andrew Hoover brings to the table a pot full of home cooked acoustic soul, R&B, and blues, stirred together with some tasty flamenco and colorful pop sprinkles. Which isn’t surprising, really, since he originally trained to be a chef. Andrew is a solo musician, though he voices several instruments in his live shows. His unique slap guitar style carries inspirations from the bass and percussion instruments, giving his songs a groove and rhythm not often associated with singer-songwriters. His vocal style is raw and original, colorful, and dynamic. Andrew takes his cues from a variety of his heroes including but not limited to Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Marc Broussard, Ray LaMontagne, Raul Midon, James Morrison, and Martin Sexton. Although the race began over five years ago, Sun Domingo remains the feverish and unmistakably fresh, Atlanta-based power trio whose delivery of solid pop rock continues to energize and enthrall. Musicians, music fans and unsuspecting toe-tappers alike are intensely drawn to the magnetic live performances that crown catchy hooks and straightforward musicianship. As boys from the Southeast, Jason Pomar (lead vocals/bass), Edgel Groves Jr. (guitar/vocals) and Nathan Lathouse (drums/vocals), materialize a sonic sound and personality that drives their quirky, intelligent reflection of the post-adolescent world. It is one that we all crave, youthful or not, whether we know it or not, in a time of carbon-copied, mindless and uninspiring music.

An Acoustic Evening with Mason Jennings
Singer/songwriter Mason Jennings blends the personal insights of a poet, the political broadsides of a protest singer, and the broad musical eclecticism of a jazz musician with a rock & roller's passion. The result made him one of the most talked-about new artists on the acoustic music scene and earned him a loyal cult following, as he moved over 30,000 copies of his first two albums and sold out shows around the country without the benefit of a major-label publicity department.

Greg Brownwith The Pines Brown's songwriting has been lauded by many, and his songs have been performed by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He has also recorded more than a dozen albums, including his 1986 release, Songs of Innocence and of Experience, when he put aside his own songwriting to set poems of William Blake to music. One Big Town, recorded in 1989, earned Brown three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, chart-topping status in AAA and The Gavin Report's Americana rankings and Brown's first Indie Award from NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors). The Poet Game, his 1994 CD, received another Indie award from NAIRD. His critically acclaimed 1996 release, Further In, was a finalist for the same award. Rolling Stone's four-star review of Further In called Brown "a wickedly sharp observer of the human condition." 1997's Slant 6 Mind (Red House Records) earned Brown his second Grammy nomination. His latest CD, One Night (Red House), is a re-release of a 1983 live performance originally on Minneapolis' Coffeehouse Extemporé Records. In a world swimming in singer/songwriters, it's difficult to rise above the masses and create a truly unique sound that captures ears and stimulates the mind. The Pines are a band that has taken on this feat, honing their musical craft to near perfection with a sound that wavers on the edge of traditional acoustic/roots music, but embraces the nuances of today's indie-rock and blues music. Meeting in a Mexican barrio in Arizona, fellow Iowans David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey began playing music together, forming The Pines. Committing to a musical career, they returned to their Midwestern roots and settled in Minneapolis, a music haven that has launched the careers of such folk and rock legends as Bob Dylan, The Jayhawks and The Replacements.

With hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen, Iron and Wine and Kelly Joe Phelps, Gregory Alan Isakov has been described as “strong, subtle, a lyrical genius” and has shared the stage with touring artists such as Calexico, Ani Difranco, Brandi Carlile, Indigo Girls, Richie Havens, and Fiona Apple. Micah Dalton & Rachael Sage
with Mori Einsidler
“He may sound like an earthier, cleverer Ben Harper, but musically Dalton suggests mid-’80s Prince in the way he defiantly straddles so many styles, requiring an enormous musical arsenal to get his point across. These juxtapositions of sounds and style rarely feel forced or even deliberate, courtesy of Dalton’s soulful vocals and incisive songwriting.”- PASTE MAGAZINE
Multi award-winning New York songwriter Rachael Sage has penned quirky, melodic pop songs since she was old enough to reach the piano keys. Over the course of her career, she has steadily built a loyal grassroots fanbase with a rigorous international tour schedule, performing in inventive configurations featuring Wurlitzer, drums, trumpet and string quartet. Like her musical idol Elvis Costello, she's endlessly fascinated with the crafts of songwriting and arrangement, and counts Buddy Holly, The Beatles, David Bowie and perhaps most surprisingly, John Lee Hooker among her biggest inspirations.

Ellis PaulEllis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting. He was a principle leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990's. His charismatic, personally authentic performance style has influenced a generation of artists away from the artifice of pop, and closer towards the realness of folk. Though he remains among the most pop-friendly of today's singer-songwriters - his songs regularly appear in hit movie and TV soundtracks - he has bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger more successfully than perhaps any of his songwriting peers.

Hoots & Hellmouth with Garrison Starr
Philadelphia-based Hoots & Hellmouth (MAD Dragon Records) creates new music for old souls. Their second full-length effort, “The Holy Open Secret” (street date: June 2, 2009), continues to blaze a trail forward in the name of progressive revival. Rob Berliner, Andrew Gray and Sean Hoots return as the core trio of string slingers and harmonious vocalizers, co-producing in collaboration with Bill Moriarity (Dr. Dog, Man Man) at Philadelphia’s American Diamond studio. The results speak for themselves in tones ranging from the triumphant to the dulcet. Blending the twisted roots of American music in a fierce and fiery alchemy, this ragtag bunch seeks a revival of spirit. Soulful three-part harmonies comingle with acoustic guitars, a mandolin, an upright bass and foot stomps building a synergy that bursts from both stage and speaker with aural aplomb. “It's about bleeding, sweating, crying, rejoicing," the band’s Sean Hoots says of their work. “It’s alive!” Garrison invites listeners into her visceral world by constructing an intimate portrait of contemporary life as experienced by a soul longing for meaning and connection and as a person dealing with love in many forms - physical and spiritual, lost and gained. A fearless performer, her audience always leaves reluctantly after getting a taste of her humor and humility. A native of Hernando, Mississippi, Garrison’s southern background subtly peeks through her songs as she blends a pop/rock/alternative sound with her country vocal curl. First time listeners fall hard for her voice.

Songwriter's Circle hosted by Ingrid Graudins with Naomi Ashley, Steve Dawson, Robbie Fulks & Chris Neville With her gorgeous cream -and-Kahlua voice, Chicago’s Naomi Ashley is a dazzling performer who brings her songs to startling, vibrant life. Her songs are intimate, plainspoken and gorgeously sung — drawing on the American folk, blues and country traditions — which surge with all the contradictory impulses of real, imperfect life. Between songs, she's free-spirited, forthright and very funny, connecting easily with her audience. A born-storyteller, she weaves witty, often hilarious observations and touching stories from her life in Chicago, and as a girl growing up on her parent's farm in Moville, Iowa. "Steve J. Dawson was born in San Diego, raised in Hailey, Idaho, and lives in Chicago. His songs are influenced by all 3 places - the California pop of the early 70's, the country music on the radio in Idaho, and the blues and R&B of Chicago. Dawson is perhaps better known as the front man and co-leader of the critically-acclaimed Chicago band Dolly Varden. Dawson's first solo album, 'Sweet Is The Anchor', was released in 2005. Critics noted Dawson's strength as both a songwriter and singer, combining elements of country and soul. His brand new solo album, "I Will Miss The Trumpets And The Drums" (Undertow), will be available everywhere on February 23, 2010. It is available now exclusively from the Undertow store, www.undertowstore.com. Forget the labels… “Insurgent,” “Retro,” “Alternative,” … and focus instead on the music. Some might try to copy old music, but ROBBIE FULKS knows it, loves it, and brings its spirit, its humor, and its otherworldliness to his own work. He’s the man who famously gave Nashville the middle-finger salute-in-song and then devoted an entire album to rare and obscure country songs that almost no one in latter-day Nashville had even heard. And while most current country music is calculated to form an inoffensive backdrop to the suburban shopping experience, Robbie Fulks writes songs that make you think and feel and quite often laugh out loud. Chris Neville was born and raised in the Chicago music arena - owner and engineer at 916 Productions, he is known for playing with with Modern Humans, and Saltines!, Recent years find him leading one of Chicago's favorite tribute bands, Tributosaurus. He writes and records with a new production collective, CBJ, which produces and licenses music for the UK and Europe. He scores for film, and does sound design for games.

Over The Rhine with Lucy Wainwright Roche
After more than 15 years making music, it’s obvious Ohio duo Over The Rhine is in it for the long haul, and for keeps. Their commitment is underscored by their latest, The Trumpet Child, and its opening track, “I Don’t Wanna Waste Your Time,” a manifesto of sorts for the artists recently named to Paste magazine’s list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. Over The Rhine may not be a household name, but to call the act’s followers “fanatical” would understate the point, and they’re not shy about converting the curious. Why? For starters, there’s Bergquist’s torchy, devil-may-care voice, brimming with Midwestern soul, unafraid to lay bare every emotional resonance. And again, there’s the life-and-death commitment dripping from her every word. “I’m either into it or I’m not, because there’s no faking it with me,” Bergquist notes. “Life’s way too short for that.” Detweiler and Bergquist’s evocative, earthy songwriting and impassioned delivery is at its finest in The Trumpet Child. The new record is a collaboration with ultra-talented Nashville producer/arranger Brad Jones (Matthew Sweet, Josh Rouse, Ron Sexsmith, Richard Julian, et. al) and celebrates American music in the most richly imaginative ways. Lucy Wainwright Roche grew up in Greenwich Village, New York City. She is the daughter of two performing musicians, Loudon Wainwright and Suzzy Roche (The Roches). Her childhood was spent living out of a suitcase, either on the road, with her parents or being ferried around to different relatives in her big musical clan. About her childhood, Lucy has this to say: “I loved being on the road as a kid. It was like traveling in a pack, which is something that is fundamentally appealing to me. It included the best parts of a good book: the ups and downs of an ever-changing, ever-moving adventure, new characters in every town and all along I had everything I needed with me. My family, music and a window seat in the van.”

93XRT welcomes Alice Peacockwith Peter Bradley Adams Chicago-based singer/songwriter Alice Peacock’s new disc, Love Remains, celebrates faith and human connection with buoyant, outwardly focused lyrics, feel-good guitar hooks and heartland grooves. Working in Nashville with co-writer/co-producer Danny Myrick – who, like her, is the child of a minister – Peacock found herself addressing issues of faith in myriad ways on Love Remains, on songs like the anthemic “If I Could Talk To God,” the rollicking “Real Life,” the expansive, gospel-inflected “Trying To Hold Back Time,” the punchy, resolute “Forgiveness,” the devastating, indelible “I Am Mary” and the timeless-sounding title track. Peter Bradley Adams, co-founder of eastmountainsouth, was originally signed by one of his idols, Robbie Robertson. A gifted musician, Adams has a Masters in composition, and before venturing into songwriting and performing he had a thriving career in film and TV scoring. After a hugely successful debut with eastmountainsouth, Adams self-produced and released Gather Up in 2006. Now, Adams builds upon the sophisticated acoustic rock of Gather Up with the cinematic and ethereal sound of Leavetaking.
