October 4, 2011 // 8 PMThe Mekons
The Mekons present a one-off night of music and Meekakucha (talking slide show), hosted by Peter Exley. Based on the popular Pechakucha nights, Mekons will present their own talking slide shows for the early part of the evening followed by an acoustic performance featuring songs from their new CD Ancient and Modern 1911-2011.
Mekons formed in Leeds, England 34 years ago in 1977 and Ancient & Modern is their 26th album. They combine traditional rock instrumentation with fiddle, saz, accordion and oud to create their singular live shows, which incorporate American country, English folk, reggae and punk influences. They are considered to be one of the great live rock and roll bands, performing regularly over three decades in Europe and the United States. Featuring the classic lineup that has remained intact for over 15 years the Mekons may well be, as Lester Bangs once wrote, "the most revolutionary group in the history of rock 'n' roll." They're certainly the most entertaining and consistently fascinating.
Peter Exley hosts his very popular Pechakucha nights at Martyrs on a regular basis, he moves north to bring his brilliant idea of a special Mekons Pechakucha night to an Evanston audience.
**PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.
